Communists in the 1950s... hm. Well, it all goes back to the second World War. After that war, the Soviet Union and the satellite states it had either influence over or had actively conquered or liberated were squared up against America and Western Europe over a number of major issues, both ideological and some of them to do with territory.
Communists believe in a society where you are provided for according to your needs, and work as best you are able. That's a very simple way of putting it, and the society people in Mayfield actually refer to as communist under Stalin and his successors was really much closer to an Authoritarian world view.
