A large portion of eastern Europe united into the Soviet Union, which subscribed to Communism as opposed to the capitalist economy favoured by western Europe and the US. The two major powers never directly fought, but there were many wars in proxy countries as well as constant threats of all out nuclear war.
I think you must be right about the future. The technology the town uses to bring people here isn't consistent with the decade when the first orbital sattelites were launched.
